The Pluto Opposition to America’s Venus: the Great Recession

In March, 2009, Pluto opposed Venus exactly at 3° degrees Capricorn for the first time. A panic on the stock market was taking place during this transit, and the stock and housing markets fell to their lowest levels in many years. Many banks, holding companies and other giant financial institutions were wiped out. Credit grew tighter and tighter. Subprime loans died, as did many other kinds of lending. Millions of people lost their jobs. Millions more lost their homes. Unemployment effectively rose to 10% and greater, depending on how it was measured.

Venus in a nation’s chart rules money, the flow of supply, the flow of goods and trade; it rules the nation’s banks and those functions which are to hold money and extend credit. When money tightens up, when its flow slows down, a recession, even a depression occurs.

What was happening here? Where was the creative destruction of Pluto at work? Creative destruction destroys anything that is false and unreal. What collapsed was an economic real-estate bubble; it had been expanding for many years; it was encouraged by the government and by banks and other lenders. Oddly, this bubble was almost invisible, until it burst. Prime Minister Tony Blair in his Memoirs discussed the strangeness of this phenomenon: Almost no one, including politicians, bankers, economists, realized that there was a bubble that was going to burst. Plutonian influence always acts to bring things back into balance.

Creative Destruction of Pluto Opposed Venus 

Plutonian influence destroys what is old, tired, worn out, not working, dysfunctional, or something that karmically has taken too much and now must give back. In other words, it seeks to eradicate whatever stops or inhibits the flow of life force, whether it is money or political power or an army, which is why among other things it rules wealth creation, vast powers and war.

The flaw in the American economy, which surfaced in a way everyone could see, was what were called “toxic real-estate loans” or “toxic assets”. For many years housing loans had been made to people who could not afford to pay them back. Pluto opposed Venus uncovered the real-estate bubble. When bubbles like this one burst, and the cost of paying a mortgage suddenly increases to an amount far greater than the value of the house, the borrower will simply walk away from that debt. What the bank is left holding is called a toxic asset. There were millions of these all over America.

The toxic asset problem worked itself out of the economy over several years, and a recovery happened.

Politicians and bureaucrats mostly ended the policy of giving loans to those who could not afford them, even though it interfered with their short-term gains like popularity and getting re-elected.

You can never run away from Plutonian influence, ever. It always destroys what is wrong, obstructive, what is toxic, and it does this so that the flow of life can continue and regenerate. Pluto is the planet of rebirth.

This recession only receded slowly, because it took our politicians and bureaucrats a long time to address its root causes. Plutonian influence always works that way. It makes you do it whether you want to or not.

It is important to note that Pluto was opposing one of America’s four Cancerian planets. In any historical chart the sign Cancer, and also the Moon, describe the people of a nation. A great wave of repugnance and anger, aimed at our elites, swept the USA in 2010, and in the elections that occurred in November, 2010, a huge number of politicians were voted out of office. This was an effect of Pluto opposed Venus.

During the opposition of Pluto to the US Jupiter and Sun this wave, one lasting well into 2017, the process of elimination and cleansing continued.

With Plutonian manifestations you seldom know what is going to happen until it happens. Pluto wears a mask that hides how it will be altering the human condition. I, like many other astrologers, saw this opposition coming. Like many others in differing disciplines interested in economics and the unfolding of history, I had no idea that the American economy (and to some extent the world economy) was carrying such a toxic bubble. For that we had to wait for Pluto to drop the mask.
